Confessions of an Academic Pseudo-Giraffe
Theory of relativity
I just read two news items. Each sounded kind of normal when examined separately, but together they really revealed something.
Item 1. The UN has made an appeal to the international community for a record amount of aid for next year. They ask for a total of 4.7 billion dollars, meant for helping the victims of war, famine, and natural catastrophes in 26 countries. Sounds ambitious, and one can only predict difficulty in reaching the goal.
Item 2. Once again, Bush declares an objective of unconditional victory in Iraq. The war that had no legitimate purpose to begin with has ended tens of thousands and ruined millions of lives, fuelling extremist hatred and terrorism more efficiently than anyone could have imagined. The country is in chaos, with no improvement in sight. And here's the interesting bit: the USA is using six billion dollars per month to maintain its military operations there.
